Tree Study – Winter
During winter, attention should be brought to the shapes of trees without their “leafy” covering. The actual spread of branches can be noticed at this time.
Winter work
Make a sketch of the tree in your Nature Study Journal showing its actual shape as it stands with no leaves.
Does the trunk divide into branches or does it extend throughout the center of the tree and the branches come off from its sides?
What use are the branches to a tree?
Are the twigs at the end, course or fine? Do they droop?
Is the bark on the branches like the bark on the trunk?
Is the color of the spray the same color as the branches?
What birds come to your tree in winter? Place some peanut butter and bird seed in a feeder or on a pine cone and attach it to your tree to see who it attracts.
