June Activity

Summer Insect Fun

On a warm night, turn on your porch light. Tape a white cloth below it and see what insects are attracted to the light, hang on to the cloth, or climb on your screen door. Some night flying insects will stay long enough for you to get close so that you can observe and even draw them in your Nature Journal.

Since many insects are light oriented, they confuse the light with the moonlight.

Make simple line drawings in your Nature Journal of the insects that are attracted to your porch light. You may be surprised by the variety. Identify and label your drawings using a field guide to insects.
